THE HISTORIC TREME NEIGHBORHOOD
Flambeaux Bicycle Tours is located on the edge of the French Quarter. North Rampart Street is named because of the fortifications that ran along the edge of the original city of New Orleans. On the other side of the fortification was a brickyard owned by the Company of the Indies that later became a sugar cane plantation. The last person to own the plantation was Claude Treme. Subdivided in the 1810’s it would become the first free community of color in the United States.
From this bourgeoning faubourg our Francophone ancestors developed Jazz, social movements, and culinary magic. This travel guide is designed to help you explore these facets of the neighborhood. This simple guide is designed to help you encounter the food, culture, and story of the Treme.
